Golden Demographics

Founded in 1859 Golden, Colorado
is the county seat of Jefferson County and one of Colorado 's
oldest cities. We will be
celebrating our 150th year in 2009. Golden came to life during the Pike's
along the eastern
edge of the Front Range .
The 2005 census
estimated our population at 17,366, with 6,877 households and 3,913 families.
The racial makeup breaks down to 90% Anglo, 1% Black or African American, 1%
Native Amer-
ican, 2% Asian, 5% Hispanic and 1% other races. Our average family
size is 2.85 and average
household is 2.31.
The median age in Golden is 33, approximately 20% of our population is under
the age of 18,
with 16% ranging from 18 to 24, 33% from25-44, 21% from
45-64 and 8% over the age of 65.
There are 120.2 males for every 100 females.
As of 2005, the median income for a household was $49,115, and $67,414 for
families.
Females had a median income of $32,000 as compared to the male
median income of
$42,000. Our per capita income is $25,000. Only 3.5% of families and 11.3% of the pop-
ulation are below the poverty line.
There are 3,199 homes within 1 mile of the city center, 9,270 units within 3 miles and
27,029 units within a 5 mile radius with owner occupied housing making up approx-
imately 96% and only 3% vacant housing units.
Golden is part of the Jefferson County R-1 school district. The Colorado School of Mines,
Colorado's oldest institution of higher education has in campus in the heart of the city.
